Other information and services: belgium.beBelgium logo

GenderStat.be brings together a wide range of gender statistics and indicators produced by various federal institutions, thus providing easy access to reliable figures on gender-related differences and inequalities in Belgium.

The portal presents data through clear graphs and charts, accompanied by short explanations across multiple domains: population, paid work, time use and work-life balance, income, social security, poverty and social inclusion, representation and decision-making, health, gender-based violence, crime and safety, discrimination, mobility, digitalization, asylum and migration, and specific topics related to transgender, non-binary, and intersex persons.

This tool is designed for a broad and diverse audience: policymakers, civil society, public authorities, social partners, academia, the media, and the general public.

The website is currently available in French and Dutch.

An instrument to support public policy

The main goal of GenderStat.be is to provide a comprehensive picture of the situation of women and men in Belgium. More specifically, it seeks to:

  • improve the accessibility and visibility of gender-disaggregated data and gender indicators

  • facilitate the identification of differences between women and men and monitor their evolution

  • support the evaluation of public policies and their impact on gender equality

  • assist in developing and implementing targeted policies for gender equality

  • optimize the production and collection of gender-disaggregated statistical data and gender indicators.

The website is also designed as a practical tool for policymakers and public administrations. Its objectives—to facilitate the identification of differences between the situations of women and men, and to support the assessment of the impact of public policies on these situations—are fully aligned with the implementation of gender mainstreaming. This approach, promoted at the European level, aims to integrate the gender dimension into all public policies.

The Institute for the Equality of Women and Men

The Institute for the equality of women and men was created in December 2002 as the autonomous federal public institution responsible for guaranteeing and promoting gender equality and to combat any form of gender-based discrimination and inequality by developing and implementing a fitting legal framework, structures, strategies, tools and actions. The Institute aims at anchoring gender equality as natural in society in our actions and mentalities.

The Institute consists of multiple units, each working in different domains, such as discrimination, sexism, intimate partner violence, the labour market, politics, gender mainstreaming, transgender issues, international issues, research… Its legal unit handles requests for information and complaints from gender discrimination victims.

The Institute developed GenderStat.be as part of the Gender & Work project, implemented by the Institute under Belgium’s federal gender equality policy within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This project was funded by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan.
